I he(art): Anne Ten Donkelaar

Existing in a realm somewhere between Joseph Cornell's boxes, a 10-year old boy's mounted insect collection (turns out that's not such a stretch, after all), and Things Organized Neatly, the delicate floating flower collages of Anne Ten Donkelaar are captivating. Made from both pressed and cut out images of flowers, there is a sense of both the real and the unreal in the artworks. This contradictory quality seems to be a recurring theme - the meticulous compositions are a contrast to the natural forms of which the works are made, and the act of placing the floral arrangements behind glass takes otherwise fragile and ephemeral materials and gives them the strength of something much more permanent and eternal. Love these.
